Currently writing to you from Vietnam (Hội An if you know it!):

Been about 20 years since I was last here and it has change a lot. Mad amounts.

20 years ago Hội An was still (relatively!) early days in terms of tourism. It was a quiet, beautiful little town famed for its silk clothing and extremely inexpensive suits. I had a suit custom tailored back then for <$100.

Now? Woah. Absolutely jam packed. A couple decades of development have turned it into a veritable Disney Land.

Don’t get me wrong - still absolutely gorgeous. But now with 10x the people!

Got me thinking (I’m boring like that) about the power of being early.

Right now we are still sitting on the cusp of AI being the big thing.

Yes absolutely there is hype.

Yes absolutely there are companies making bad products with AI.

But we’re basically at the “beginning of the internet” stage of modern AI. It’s finally becoming viable. And genuinely useful in everyday life in a way that it hasn’t before.

In the same way that after the DotCom crash of the early 2000s we still had something extremely valuable left over.

It’s called…the internet!

Fortunes were made and the major companies of today (Google, Amazon, Apple…) began to lock in their positions as the most important businesses on earth.

We are the internet in the 1990s. We are Hội An 20 years ago.

This is the time to stake out your claim. To land grab. To set up something.

Because we’re still early with the practical applications of AI.

There is, to quote someone much smarter than I (Ethan Mollick), a capability overhang.

We haven’t worked out all the things we can do with AI yet.

In the same way that early 2000s internet hadn’t worked out what could be done with the internet. Facebook didn’t even exist until 2004! We were internet babies in the year 2000!

So: here’s the question.

If you were sitting here in Hội An 20 years ago. Or at the start of the internet a little earlier…

What’s your play?

Knowing what you know now what would you do? What will you build?

Because there’s an expiration date here. That multimillion dollar idea you have this moment won’t be worth as much in a couple of years. It’s genuinely the time to act and go all in.
