Or should I say the land of DeepSeek 😅

China is taking AI extremely seriously.

I was in a Beijing bookshop the other day (one of multiple I visited - yes I’m a bookshop nerd) and the whole front section of the store was AI books.

One (of many!) displays

Books on how to use AI in daily life. Books about building with AI. Books about the history and emergence of DeepSeek. And many more.

All in pride of place at the front of the shop, filling the bestsellers charts and at the counters.

There’s a huge popular interest in AI and much less of the fear I see when I’m back in Europe or America.

I’ve also noticed pride. I was chatting to my seat neighbour on the flight over and she was froM Hangzhou. A place she proudly said was where DeepSeek is from! And this is before I mentioned anything about AI 😯

What’s been fascinating to see is a completely different way of embracing AI. Top down and bottom up.

Of course all of this is anecdotal and based purely on what I’m seeing and the people I’m talking to. But it’s exciting. And I’m hoping to learn a lot more about the parallel Chinese AI scene.
